How do you rate your singing voice then? Better than Bob Dylan? Worse than a scalded cat? I myself would not get far on The X Factor, unless, perhaps, my little daughter were among the judges. So, lately I was delighted to hear Schindler’s Ark novelist Thomas Keneally on Desert Island Discs, choosing Shane MacGowan’s 'Fairytale of New York' amid a more illustrious classical selection. ‘The thing is’, Keneally opined, ‘it’s a deeply lyrical song, by a bloke who can’t sing.’ All this preamble is leading us, naturally, toward songs and singers in movies...
